“Tune out the Naysayers, Tune into your own courage, And take a bold step toward the Passion filled life you really want”
~Oprah Winfrey
Think of how dramatically our world has changed in just the last few decades. We are enjoying some truly amazing advancements in technology, environmental, lifesaving surgeries, and many more. The progress has been pretty remarkable in such a short time in history.
That said, we have also created some DEVESTATING obstacles to healthy living and as a result the lives of millions of people around the world are being burdened and cut short by chronic illness, pain and disease.
Here are a few alarming statistics on chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis, which are the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems.
Cancer
- Cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in the United States, and is expected to surpass heart diseases as the leading cause of death in the next few years (ACS)
- In 2015, there will be an estimated 1,658,370 NEW cancer cases diagnosed and 589,430 cancer deaths in the US (ACS)
Obesity
- 68.5% of adults are overweight or obese; 34.9% are obese (FRAC)
- 31.8% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese; 16.9% are obese (FRAC)
“Because of the increasing rates of obesity, unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity, we may see the first generation that will be less healthy and have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.” (AHA)
Do you know someone that unfortunately is a statistic of one of the above? With heart disease, cancer, diabetes, respiratory illness, auto immune disorders like Autism or maybe even suffers from obesity? I do and I miss some of them dearly.
